We are all familiar with the photographer, who captures what he sees and feels into a photo. In these short stories, I do pretty much the same, the difference being that my impressions are captured into words that typically cover 1-3 pages of text. As someone told me recently, architects have good eyes, and excellent writing skills that are used for describing their findings and systems harmony.

Architecture documents are abstract and concise of nature; they can be viewed as essential writings about a certain topic. In their own, such documents from experienced architects are the result of artistic simplicity. And this is exactly the reason that I feel that there must be an audience for such writings about real life experiences in the form of what I call Architecture Impressions.

I strongly believe that "Essential Writing" can be called some kind of literature which is characterized by a rich use of words and a strong story. The main difference is that I try to use few words that essentially describe a situation according to the business adagio "less is more".

My style is based on architecture experiences, much reading, many emails, chats and international conversations; this implicates concise scenery descriptions, with in mind my motto of Beauty by Simplicity.

Please enjoy and share these stories.

Happy Hour

Happy Hour

Twice I have experienced “Happy Hour”, but let me first explain what it denotes. “Happy Hour” is a bar term. It promotes a certain period of time, in which the drinks are less expensive than normally. This time period is usually between 4 and 6 pm or between 5 and 7 pm. It is especially during these hours, when we have stopped our daily work, that we are ready to have a few drinks.

Meeting by Surprise

Meeting by Surprise

In 2002 I had to go to New York for business, and my secretary arranged the flight. It turned out to be flight KL6071 with KLM from AMS (Amsterdam airport, also known as Schiphol) to JFK (John F Kennedy airport of New York). The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has defined three letter acronyms for all its airport members in the world.

The Buddha Bar concept

The Buddha Bar concept

Some time ago I was introduced to a large collection of Buddha Bar music, typified by Eastern and Western influences in a marvelous mixture. And I am hooked ever since this introduction. What is the story behind this music ? As follows. In 1996 the first Buddha Bar restaurant was opened in Paris.

Systems Thinking

Systems Thinking

In May, 2004, I had a chance to visit Brussels, the beautiful Belgian capital. I stayed at the Ibis hotel which is located in the North West of the city, near the exposition area. That day, I was up early and had a chance to take part in the breakfast that was offered by the hotel. There were not many people in the room that was created for this purpose. It was Sunday when most of us are not so much pressed for time.

I took my time for collecting the things that I apparently wanted, objects with a choice that was also influenced by the objects as they were available in this hotel, of course. I mean, in any other hotel, my breakfast would be different, both in context as well as in terms of what I would eat and how it would please me.

And tomorrow’s breakfast would be different, too. I am like that. I found a tray, walked around the buffet, identifying what was actually there, and what was not there, in so far as I could. There were many objects at the buffet, some of which I needed to organize for my breakfast. And each object had it’s own look and feel, location, way of handling and potential taste. For example, there were boiled eggs, without a shell, and later I found that they were cold, where I expected them to be warm.

In this hotel, the breakfast was completely self service, whereas in other hotels, a waitress offers you orange juice and coffee or tea. Here, you just collected the things you wanted, as much and often as you wanted, and the price would be the same for each guest. In all hotels, the room number is key for calculating your bill. It is registered in all your financial transactions with the hotel, breakfast being one of them, usually. Most of these transactions are validated with your signature, though I doubt that this process is full proof. If you know the rules, you can learn to break them and let other guests pay for your transactions, if you want. I am not like that. The rules are not always clear to me, and in many cases I am the victim of exceptions.

For example, I was unable to find the pepper and salt, and I had to make inquiries for them. As it turned out, they were hidden in an obscure corner, just around the buffet location. The exceptions amuse me. Actually, I have learned to understand and enjoy the many exceptions that are inherent to any system, breakfast being one of them.

Ann Change and Lost
25 May 2017
Well, my plans changed today or should I say they were cancelled. I sat lost for a few hours, lost in thought, lost in the moment. It was a lovely thing. I realize I can change and go forward with some nice freedom, inspired by this story. I stopped a moment and wrote this comment and now I go.

Nice recount! Dreams are an interesting glance into our minds and seem quite elusive for me, remembering dreaming and forgetting the content most times. Is there something I am missing? Probably
Ann Clinic Rules

good rules vs bad rulesFollowing rules was extreme programming from infancy for me. First rule: You are here to help your mother, You are the servant of your family. I was taught to be an adult as an infant and only recently found the un-nurtured infant inside. In finding my infant I was able to stop crying for what seemed to be no reason. I have learned through much therapy that some rules are a method of abuse. I have learned to use better judgement in following rules. Some rules are for our...
